Purpose ofthe Role:
The Befriender Volunteer role is designed to provide companionship and support to individuals who may be isolated or lonely. By forming a supportive relationship, the volunteer helps improve the emotional well-being and quality of life of the befriendee.
Key Responsibilities:
· Build Relationships: Develop a positive and trusting relationship with the befriendee through regular communication and visits.
· Provide Companionship: Spend time engaging in activities such as talking, playing games, going for walks, or attending community events together.
· Offer Emotional Support: Listen actively and empathetically to the concerns and feelings of the befriendee, providing comfort and understanding.
· Monitor Well-being: Observe and report any concerns regarding the health or well-being of the befriendee to the Volunteer Coordinator.
· Encourage Participation: Motivate and encourage the befriendee to participate in social activities and community events.
· Maintain Confidentiality: Respect and always maintain the privacy and confidentiality of the befriendee.
· Follow Guidelines: Adhere to the policies and guidelines set forth by the Humbercare,including safeguarding and health and safety procedures.
Skills and Qualities Needed:
· Good Communication Skills: Ability to listen and communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
· Empathy and Compassion: A caring nature and the ability to show understanding and support.
· Reliability and Commitment: Consistent availability and dedication to maintaining regular contact with the befriendee.
Patience: Ability to be patient and provide support without judgment.
Discretion: Capacity to handle sensitive information confidentially.
Flexibility: Willingness to adapt to the needs and preferences of the befriendee.
Time Commitment:
· A minimum commitment of 1 hour per week for 6 months is required. The exact schedule can be flexible and agreed upon with the Volunteer Coordinator.
Trainingand Support:
· Volunteerswill receive initial training covering key aspects of the role, includingcommunication skills, safeguarding, and health and safety.
· Ongoingsupport and supervision will be provided by the Volunteer Coordinator, withopportunities for further training and development.
