Volunteering is often described as a selfless act, but my time with Humbercare has shown me it is so much more than that. How It All Began
I first heard about Humbercare while searching online for meaningful volunteer opportunities. As someone deeply passionate about community service, I was drawn to their mission and the impact they create in the lives of their service users. Their Befriender Volunteer role immediately stood out, offering a perfect platform for me to contribute positively to the community while gaining valuable experience and skills.
Motivation and Previous Experience
The decision to volunteer wasn’t random. I have always been motivated by the idea of making a difference and have previously volunteered with organisations like The Old Library in Dubai and Hull City Libraries in the UK. These experiences had already instilled in me a love for giving back, but I was eager to take on new challenges and expand my horizons with Humbercare.
Embracing the Role of a Befriender Volunteer
At Humbercare, my primary role was as a Befriender Volunteer. This involved supporting service users, meeting with clients, and conducting client assessments. Every part of volunteering was fulfilling, but I especially enjoyed connecting with service users, hearing their unique stories, and helping them navigate their goals. From discussing their interests to planning shared activities like cooking and shopping for Nigerian meals, every interaction brought something new and exciting to the table.
A Perfect Alignment with My Values and Goals
Volunteering with Humbercare resonated deeply with my personal values and aspirations. It provided a space to develop skills like communication, customer service, and cultural competence. Meeting people from diverse backgrounds and interests allowed me to broaden my perspective and grow both personally and professionally.

Sharing my knowledge about Nigerian cuisine and planning a group shopping trip for a cooking session stands out as a highlight. My time at Humbercare has been unforgettable, and I hope to continue working with the team in a full-time capacity soon. For now, I leave with a wealth of experiences!
